An iPad that suddenly will not start can leave you stranded: a student without lecture notes, a doctor without patient charts, an artist without an unfinished drawing. The screen is black, or the white Apple logo stays forever, or the iPad restarts again and again in a loop. In most cases the iPad can be revived, and often without losing any data, but the order in which you try things matters a great deal. This guide explains the common reasons an iPad will not turn on or gets stuck on the Apple logo, the exact steps for every iPad model, how to use recovery mode safely, and the symptoms that mean it should go to a workshop in Delhi.

Which of these four situations is yours?
- Black screen, no sign of life: no logo, no sound, no response to charging.
- Black screen but the iPad is on: you hear sounds, feel the Pencil connect, or see a very faint image under bright light.
- Stuck on the Apple logo: the logo stays for many minutes, or a progress bar sits still.
- Boot loop: the iPad shows the logo, restarts, shows it again and repeats.
The causes and fixes for each are different, so identify your situation first.
Common reasons an iPad will not turn on
The battery is completely flat
If the iPad sat unused for weeks, the battery may be fully discharged. It needs 15 to 30 minutes of charging before it shows any life. This is normal and not a fault.
A weak adapter or faulty cable
A small phone charger cannot revive a flat iPad quickly. Use a 20W USB-C adapter and a good cable plugged into a wall socket.
A frozen system
iPadOS can lock up completely, making the iPad appear dead. A force restart fixes this, usually in seconds.
A failed or interrupted update
If the iPad ran out of battery or storage during an update, or you interrupted it, it may hang on the logo with a progress bar. This requires recovery mode.
Full storage
An iPad with only a few hundred MB of free storage can struggle to start up or finish an update. It may show the logo and then restart repeatedly.
A worn-out or swollen battery
A badly aged battery cannot deliver the power for start-up. A swollen battery is a safety issue; stop charging and bring the iPad in at once. See our iPad battery replacement guide.
Display or backlight failure
The iPad may be working fine but showing a black screen because the display, its cable or the backlight has failed. This is a display repair, not a dead iPad.
Liquid damage
Spills, humidity and sweat can cause corrosion that leads to power faults. If your iPad ever got wet, avoid repeated charging attempts.
Drop damage
A fall can loosen the battery or display connector or damage the board even when the glass looks fine.
A faulty charging port
If the iPad does not charge at all, the cause may be the port rather than the battery. Read iPad not charging: causes and fixes.
A board-level or storage fault
When the iPad restarts endlessly, even after a recovery restore, the storage chip or logic board may be damaged. This needs professional repair.
Step-by-step: bring your iPad back to life
Step 1: Charge for 30 minutes
Use a 20W (or higher) USB-C adapter, a good cable and a wall socket. For Lightning iPads, use the supplied cable and adapter. Leave it for a full 30 minutes, even if nothing appears.
Step 2: Force restart
| iPad type | How to force restart |
|---|---|
| iPad with Home button (8th/9th gen, mini 5, Air 3 and older) | Hold the Home button and the Top button together until the Apple logo appears |
| iPad without Home button (10th gen and newer, mini 6 and newer, Air 4 and newer, iPad Pro) | Press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears |
Keep holding for up to 10 seconds. A force restart does not erase any data.
Step 3: Look for faint signs of display life
In a dark room, shine a bright torch at an angle to the screen while the iPad is charging. If you can see a very faint image, the display backlight has failed, and a display repair is needed.
Step 4: Use recovery mode if the iPad is stuck on the logo
- Connect the iPad to a Mac (using Finder) or a Windows PC (using Apple Devices or iTunes).
- Put the iPad into recovery mode: on an iPad without a Home button, press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold the Top button until the recovery screen with a cable icon appears. On a Home button iPad, hold the Home and Top buttons until the recovery screen appears.
- When the computer offers options, choose Update. This reinstalls iPadOS and tries to keep your data.
- If Update fails, only then consider Restore, which erases the iPad. Restore only if you have a backup or no data you need.
Step 5: Free up storage and avoid interruptions
If recovery works, keep the iPad charged and connected until the process ends, and clear out unused apps and videos afterwards so there is room for future updates.
Symptom guide
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Totally black after being flat for weeks | Deeply discharged battery | Charge 30 minutes with a good adapter |
| Black screen, but Pencil connects or sounds play | Display or backlight failure | Display repair |
| Apple logo with a frozen progress bar | Interrupted update | Recovery mode (Update) |
| Logo, restart, logo, restart | Storage or system corruption, or a hardware fault | Recovery mode, then technician if it repeats |
| Hot, bulging back or lifting screen | Swollen battery | Stop; urgent battery replacement |
| Dead after rain, spill or humid storage | Liquid damage | Do not keep charging; bring it in |
| No charging at all, cable feels loose | Charging port damage | Port repair |
What an "iPad Unavailable" or "Disabled" screen means
This is a different problem from a dead iPad. It means the passcode was entered wrongly too many times, or the iPad needs to be erased through recovery mode. If the iPad is linked to an Apple ID with Activation Lock, only the owner can complete setup after erasing. We cannot and will not remove Apple ID or iCloud locks, and we ask customers to show that the iPad is theirs. If you are the owner and have forgotten the passcode, recovery mode with your Apple ID details is the safe route.
When to stop and bring your iPad to a technician
- It does not respond after 30 minutes of charging and a force restart.
- The iPad is warm, bulging or smells of burning.
- Recovery mode keeps failing with error codes.
- It went through water, rain or a spill.
- It stays in a boot loop after a successful update or restore.
- You need the data and have no backup.
How we diagnose a dead iPad at Toughees Telecom
- Visual inspection for liquid marks, bent frames and port damage.
- Lab power test to see how much current the iPad draws; this separates battery, port and board faults.
- Known-good component tests with a tested battery and display to find the failing part.
- Software checks including recovery and update attempts that protect your data where possible.
- Board inspection under a microscope for shorts or corrosion.
- Written quote before any repair begins.
Repairs use genuine parts and carry a 3 to 6 months warranty, depending on the repair. See all iPad repair services in Delhi.
Why iPads get stuck on the Apple logo after an update
An iPadOS update is a big operation: the iPad downloads several gigabytes, prepares storage, replaces system files and restarts more than once. A few things commonly go wrong:
- Low battery. If the battery falls below the safe level during installation, the iPad stops partway and hangs on the logo.
- Not enough free storage. The update needs temporary space. An iPad that is nearly full can stall.
- An unstable download. Poor Wi-Fi can corrupt the update package.
- An ageing battery or storage chip. Older iPads with tired batteries are more likely to fail under the heavy load of an update.
- Interrupting the process. Switching the iPad off or unplugging during the update corrupts the installation.
A progress bar that has not moved for more than an hour on a charged iPad means the update is stuck, and it is time for recovery mode rather than more waiting.
What is DFU mode, and should you use it?
If recovery mode fails, technicians sometimes use DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode. It is a deeper state in which the iPad accepts a complete firmware reinstall even when the normal system cannot start. DFU always erases the iPad, and using it incorrectly can leave the iPad in a worse state, so it is not something we recommend for home use. If recovery fails, bring the iPad in. We first assess whether the data can be saved, and then decide whether a DFU restore is the right step.

How we try to protect your data on an iPad that will not start
- We avoid restoring unless needed. A restore wipes the iPad, so we exhaust the data-preserving options first.
- We fix the hardware cause first. A fresh battery, a repaired port or a new display often allows the iPad to boot into your normal data without any software reset.
- We tell you clearly about the risk. If only a restore can bring the iPad back and you have no backup, you hear this before we proceed.
- We never access your personal files. The iPad stays locked with your passcode, and we only test the functions needed for repair.
This is why a free diagnosis matters: you decide, with full information, what to do next. If you also want to move your data to a new device afterwards, our data transfer service can help.
What not to do with a dead or stuck iPad
- Do not keep restarting and charging repeatedly for hours; it can make a board fault worse.
- Do not choose Restore in recovery mode if you have important data and no backup.
- Do not put the iPad in rice or an oven; heat and starch damage the board.
- Do not open it with a hair dryer and a pick; the battery and display cables are fragile.
- Do not use unknown software tools that promise to "fix iOS" or remove locks; they can contain malware or erase data.
What will it cost?
| Cause | Repair | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Software or update failure | Recovery and restore | ₹800 – ₹1,800 |
| Weak or dead battery | Battery replacement | ₹4,000 – ₹8,800 |
| Port damage | Charging port replacement | ₹2,000 – ₹4,500 |
| Display or backlight failure | Screen replacement | ₹7,000 – ₹32,000 |
| Liquid damage | Cleaning and parts | ₹3,000 – ₹10,000 |
| Board or storage failure | Logic board repair | ₹4,500 – ₹20,000 |

Frequently Asked Questions About iPad Not Turning On
Why won't my iPad turn on?
Common causes are a flat battery, weak adapter or cable, a frozen system, a failed update, a swollen or worn battery, display failure, liquid damage or a board fault. Charge for 30 minutes and force restart first.
How do I force restart an iPad?
On iPads without a Home button, press and release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears. On Home button iPads, hold the Home and Top buttons together. It does not erase data.
My iPad is stuck on the Apple logo. What should I do?
Wait a few minutes, then force restart. If it remains stuck, connect it to a computer, enter recovery mode and choose Update, not Restore, to try to keep your data.
Will I lose my data if I restore the iPad?
Yes. Restore erases the iPad. Choose Update first. If Update fails, a technician can often still help preserve data before a restore.
My iPad screen is black but it seems to be on. What is wrong?
The display, its cable or the backlight is probably faulty. Shine a torch on the screen in a dark room; a faint image indicates a backlight problem that needs display repair.
Why does my iPad keep restarting?
A repeated restart loop usually means system corruption, full storage or a hardware fault such as a damaged storage chip or board. Recovery mode may fix the software cause; otherwise it needs a technician.
Can a dead iPad be repaired without losing data?
Often yes. Battery, port and display repairs do not touch your data, and many board-level repairs also keep the data intact.
Is it dangerous to charge an iPad that won't turn on?
Charging a flat iPad is safe. If the iPad is hot, bulging or has been in water, stop charging immediately and bring it to a repair shop.
How much does it cost to fix an iPad that won't turn on in Delhi?
Costs range from about ₹800 for a software fix to around ₹20,000 for a major board repair. Common repairs such as battery replacement (₹4,000–₹8,800) or port repair (₹2,000–₹4,500) fall in between.
Can you unlock an iPad that is locked with an Apple ID?
No. We do not remove Apple ID or Activation Lock. We repair devices for their rightful owners and may ask for proof of ownership.
How long does it take to repair a dead iPad?
Software fixes and charging port repairs often take a few hours. Battery replacement is usually the same day, while water damage and board repairs may take one to three days.
Do you offer a warranty on iPad repairs?
Yes. We use genuine parts and offer a 3 to 6 months warranty depending on the repair type.
