It takes one second: a glass of water tips over, a cup of chai slides off the desk, a cold drink bottle leaks inside the bag. The MacBook may keep working for a few minutes, or even for a few days, and then suddenly the screen flickers, keys stop working or it will not start at all. Liquid damage is the most time-sensitive MacBook emergency, because corrosion begins within minutes and what you do in the first hour decides whether the repair costs ₹5,000 or ₹25,000, and whether your data survives. This guide gives you the exact steps for the first 60 minutes, the mistakes that make things worse, what happens inside the MacBook, how liquid damage is repaired, what it costs in Delhi and how to protect your data on Intel, T2 and Apple silicon MacBooks.

The first 60 seconds: do these things immediately
- Do not wait to see if it is fine. Press and hold the power button until the MacBook switches off completely. Do not shut down through the menu; the quickest way is the safest.
- Unplug the charger. Pull out the power cable, because electricity plus liquid is what causes the real damage.
- Disconnect everything. Remove USB drives, hubs, headphones, SD cards, adapters and external monitors.
- Do not try to turn it on again to "check whether it works". Every start-up with liquid inside risks a short circuit.
- Take it away from the liquid and keep it from further spills.
The next 10 minutes: protect the inside
- Turn the MacBook upside down in a tent shape. Open it to about 90 degrees and place it face down over a towel, like a tent, so liquid drains out of the keyboard instead of running further in. Do not do this for long if it forces liquid towards the display hinge.
- Wipe the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth. Dab, do not rub.
- Do not shake the MacBook or tilt it back and forth, which spreads liquid to dry areas.
- Remove the case or sleeve if it is holding liquid.
- Note what spilled. Plain water, tea, milk, coffee, cold drink, juice or sea water behave very differently. Tell the technician the exact liquid.
Within the hour: get it to a specialist
Do not leave it to dry for days "to see what happens". Even clean water carries minerals and, in monsoon or tap water, dirt that corrode the board when the MacBook is later powered up. The sooner the board is opened and cleaned professionally, the less corrosion forms. If you cannot reach a shop within the hour, keep the MacBook switched off, in the tent position or flat on a dry towel in a cool, ventilated place and bring it in as soon as you can. We offer free pickup within 5–7 km of our Safdarjung Enclave shop in an emergency.
What NOT to do (the common mistakes)
| Mistake | Why it makes things worse |
|---|---|
| Turning the MacBook on to test it | Powers a board with liquid on it; causes shorts and burns components |
| Charging it | Same risk, plus the battery can be damaged |
| Using a hair dryer or putting it in the sun | Heat pushes liquid deeper, warps parts and damages the battery and display |
| Burying it in rice | Does not dry the board; leaves starch and dust inside |
| Using compressed air | Drives liquid into places it had not reached |
| Pouring alcohol or cleaning liquid inside | Spreads the spill and can damage the screen coating and parts |
| Pressing keys repeatedly | Pushes sticky liquid further under the keys |
| Opening it yourself with screwdrivers | Special screws, adhesive batteries and fragile cables are easily damaged |
| Waiting a few days | Corrosion spreads and repair costs rise |
Not all spills are equal
| Liquid | Danger level | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clean drinking water | Lower, but still serious | Minerals and later power-on cause corrosion |
| Dirty, monsoon or tap water | High | Dirt and dissolved salts conduct electricity |
| Chai or tea with milk and sugar | High | Sugar becomes sticky and attracts moisture; milk spoils and corrodes |
| Coffee | High | Acidic, often with sugar or milk |
| Cold drinks, juice, energy drinks | Very high | Sugar and acid; very sticky and corrosive |
| Beer, wine, alcohol | High | Sugar, acid and residue |
| Sea water | Highest | Salt is extremely corrosive and conducts electricity |
What happens inside the MacBook after a spill
Liquid enters through the keyboard, the speaker grilles, the ports or the trackpad edges. Once inside, three things occur:
- Short circuits. If the MacBook is powered, current flows through the liquid between points that should be separate, and tiny components can burn out in seconds.
- Corrosion. Even after the surface dries, residues on the board slowly corrode the copper tracks and chip pins. This is why a MacBook can seem fine and die days later.
- Sticky residue. Sugary liquids leave a film that keeps absorbing moisture, jams keys and conducts electricity again.
The damage is also unpredictable. One MacBook may only need the keyboard replaced, while another with the same spill needs a logic board repair, because the liquid happened to run to a sensitive area.
Intel, T2 and Apple silicon: what matters for your MacBook
| Type | What to know after a spill |
|---|---|
| Intel MacBook (before 2018) | Storage is often easier to access separately, and boards are somewhat simpler; still, switch off and bring in immediately |
| Intel with T2 (2018–2020) | Storage is encrypted and tied to the board; if the board dies, data depends on repairing it |
| Apple silicon (M1 and newer) | Processor, memory and storage are all on one board; board-level repair is often the only way to recover data |
For T2 and Apple silicon MacBooks, a backup is your real safety net. If you have a recent Time Machine or iCloud backup, your data is safe whatever happens to the MacBook. If you do not, tell us before we begin, so we choose repair methods that give your data the best chance. Our data transfer service can then move your files to a new or repaired machine.

Humidity and monsoon damage: liquid damage without a spill
Not every case begins with a visible spill. In Delhi's monsoon, humidity can climb above 80%, and a MacBook carried in a damp bag, left in a humid room or used in a steamy kitchen can collect moisture inside. Condensation also forms when a cold MacBook from an air-conditioned room is taken suddenly into hot, humid air. Over weeks, this moisture corrodes ports, the keyboard connector and board contacts. Symptoms include keys that act up only on humid days, a charging port that works sometimes, a screen that flickers in the monsoon and a MacBook that refuses to start after being unused for a while. If any of this sounds familiar, a professional cleaning is far cheaper than waiting for the board to fail.

MacBooks are not water resistant
Many customers assume that because their iPhone survives rain, their MacBook should too. MacBooks have no water resistance rating. The keyboard, speakers, ports and vents are open to the inside of the machine. Apple silicon MacBooks have a simpler internal layout and fewer moving parts than older Intel models, but they are no more waterproof. Treat every spill as an emergency, regardless of the model.
What to tell the technician
The more detail you give, the faster we can plan the repair. When you bring or send the MacBook, tell us:
- What spilled and roughly how much: a few drops or a full cup.
- When it happened and how long ago the MacBook was switched off.
- Whether it was on, charging or asleep when it got wet.
- Whether you tried to turn it on or charge it afterwards.
- What you have already done, such as drying with a hair dryer or opening it.
- Whether you have a backup and whether the data is critical.
None of this affects the price, and nobody will judge you. It simply helps us decide which tests and cleaning steps to prioritise so the repair has the best chance.
How to check if a MacBook has been exposed to liquid
If you bought a second-hand MacBook or suspect hidden damage on your own, there are some signs to look for: a keyboard that feels sticky or has keys that stick, a faint smell of sweetness or damp, visible residue around ports, discoloured or rusty screws inside the bottom case, a battery that drains abnormally, and a trackpad or speakers that behave oddly. Apple also places liquid contact indicators inside, which change colour on contact with moisture. A technician can inspect these safely. If you are about to buy a pre-owned MacBook, a quick check at our shop can save you from a very expensive mistake; see also our advice on buying refurbished devices.
Does Apple warranty cover liquid damage?
Standard warranty typically does not cover liquid damage, and the MacBook contains liquid contact indicators that show whether it has been exposed. Some AppleCare+ plans cover accidental damage for a fee, so if you have one, check its terms before deciding where to repair. If the plan has expired or you want a quick repair, a specialist like us can help. If the cost of repair is high compared with the value of an older MacBook, we will tell you honestly, and you can consider a refurbished MacBook or sell the damaged one to us.
Prevent the next spill
- Keep drinks on a separate side table, not next to the MacBook.
- Use a bottle with a lid or cap at your desk, and never leave an open cup near the laptop.
- Do not put the MacBook in a bag with an uncapped bottle or leaking cold-drink can.
- In monsoon, carry it in a waterproof sleeve.
- Back up regularly, so a spill never means lost data.
- Be careful with thin keyboard covers; they help against crumbs but Apple warns that covers can damage the display if the lid is closed.
- Consider laptop insurance if you carry your MacBook everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions About MacBook Liquid Damage
What should I do first if I spill water on my MacBook?
Immediately hold the power button to switch it off, unplug the charger and all accessories, and do not turn it on again. Wipe the outside, place it upside down in a tent shape and bring it to a repair shop as soon as possible.
Is it safe to turn on a MacBook after a spill?
No. Powering on with liquid inside can cause short circuits and permanent damage. Wait until a technician has opened and checked it.
Does rice help dry a wet MacBook?
No. Rice does not dry a circuit board effectively and can leave dust and starch inside. Professional cleaning is the right way to remove liquid and residue.
How long can I wait before taking a spilled-on MacBook for repair?
As little as possible. Corrosion starts within minutes and spreads over hours and days. A same-day visit gives the best chance of a low-cost repair.
Can a MacBook be repaired after a coffee or chai spill?
Often yes, especially if it was switched off quickly. Sugary drinks are more damaging than water but boards can usually be cleaned and repaired, and keyboards replaced.
Will I lose my data after a spill?
Not necessarily. If the board can be repaired, the data usually survives. On T2 and Apple silicon MacBooks, data depends on repairing the board, so backups are important.
How much does MacBook liquid damage repair cost in Delhi?
It typically costs ₹5,000 to ₹25,000 depending on the damage, with simple cleaning at the lower end and board repairs with several parts at the upper end. Diagnosis is free.
My MacBook works after the spill. Do I still need to check it?
Yes. Liquid residue can cause corrosion that leads to failures days or weeks later. A professional cleaning prevents later damage.
Is a spilled keyboard only a keyboard problem?
Sometimes, but not always. The liquid can reach the board and the battery. A complete inspection shows whether only the keyboard needs replacing.
Is liquid damage covered by Apple warranty?
Standard warranty usually does not cover liquid damage. Some AppleCare+ plans cover accidental damage for a fee; check your plan's terms.
How long does MacBook liquid damage repair take?
Cleaning and testing usually take one to three days, and complex board repairs with parts may take up to five days.
Do you give a warranty on liquid damage repairs?
Yes. We use genuine parts and offer a 3 to 6 months warranty on repairs and replaced parts, depending on the repair type, and we explain what is covered.
