You tap an app and nothing happens. Or the iPad opens apps and types letters by itself, as if a ghost were using it. Or the Apple Pencil lags, skips lines or refuses to connect. Touch problems on an iPad are among the hardest to ignore, because the screen is the iPad's only input. This guide explains the different kinds of iPad touch screen problems, the 12 most common causes (from a dirty screen protector to a damaged digitizer), the safe fixes to try at home, what to check if your Apple Pencil is not working, and the repairs we carry out in Safdarjung Enclave when the hardware needs attention.

Four types of iPad touch problems
| Type | What it looks like | Typical cause |
|---|---|---|
| Dead zone | One part of the screen does not respond at all | Cracked or pressure-damaged digitizer; liquid under the glass |
| Ghost touch | The iPad taps, scrolls or types by itself | Charger noise, damaged digitizer, moisture, software bug |
| Laggy or delayed touch | Taps register late or are missed | Low storage, software issues, heavy protector, failing display |
| Pencil problems | Pencil not connecting, skipping, lagging or not pressure sensitive | Pairing, tip, battery, compatibility or display damage |
12 causes of iPad touch problems
1. A dirty screen or greasy fingers
Oil, dust, sweat and food on the screen scatter the touch signal and make touches unreliable. It sounds too simple, but it is a genuine cause, especially on iPads used by children.
2. A thick or badly fitted screen protector
A cheap, thick or bubbled protector lowers touch sensitivity, particularly around the edges and near the Home button. A protector fitted over dust can also cause phantom touches.
3. A case with magnets or an edge that presses the screen
Some cases have strong magnets or a raised lip that touches the edge of the display. This can register as a permanent edge touch and confuse the swipes.
4. Charger noise and poor earthing
If ghost touch happens only while the iPad is charging, the cause is usually electrical noise from a cheap charger or a socket with poor earthing, which is common with some two-pin adapters in Indian homes. The noise travels through the iPad into the touch layer. Use a certified adapter with a good cable and a properly earthed socket.
5. A software glitch or an iPadOS bug
After an update, the touch controller settings can misbehave. A restart or a software update often cures it.
6. Low storage and a slowed iPad
When storage is almost full, the iPad slows down and touches feel delayed even though the hardware is fine.
7. Moisture on or inside the screen
Humidity, sweat and spills can create false touches, usually along the edges. If the iPad has been exposed to water, avoid charging it and bring it in.
8. A cracked glass over the digitizer
A crack, even a small one, can break the thin conductive lines of the digitizer. The result is dead zones or touches that jump around near the crack. See iPad screen replacement in Delhi.
9. Pressure or bend damage
An iPad squeezed in a bag or sat upon can damage the display layers without any visible crack. This causes lines, dead areas or ghost touches that grow worse with time.
10. A loose or damaged display cable
A drop can loosen the flex that connects the display to the board, resulting in intermittent touch that works after pressing near the edge or restarting.
11. A failing touch controller on the board
The chips that read the touch signals can fail after drops, heat or liquid exposure. The display looks fine but touch is erratic. This is a board-level repair.
12. Pencil or accessory-related problems
Sometimes the problem is not the screen but the Pencil, its tip, its battery or the pairing. We cover this in detail below.
Quick fixes you can safely try
- Clean the screen with a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water, with the iPad switched off.
- Remove the case and screen protector and test the touch again.
- Restart the iPad. If it is frozen, use a force restart: on iPads without a Home button, press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears. On Home button iPads, hold Home and Top together.
- Unplug the charger and test again; if the problem disappears, change the charger or the socket.
- Update iPadOS in Settings → General → Software Update.
- Free up storage. Delete unused apps, videos and downloads so the iPad has several GB free.
- Check Accessibility settings. In Settings → Accessibility → Touch, make sure Touch Accommodations, Assistive Touch and Switch Control are not on unexpectedly; these can make touches behave oddly.
- Reset all settings from Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Reset → Reset All Settings. It does not delete your files.
If the problem persists, the display or touch hardware is probably at fault.
Apple Pencil not working? Check these first
Which Pencil works with which iPad?
| Apple Pencil | Works with | How it connects |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Pencil (1st generation) | iPad 8th and 9th gen, iPad mini 5, iPad Air 3 (and iPad 10th gen with an adapter) | Lightning plug; charges in the iPad port |
| Apple Pencil (2nd generation) | iPad mini 6, iPad Air 4 and 5, iPad Pro 11" and 12.9" (USB-C models up to 2022) | Magnetic edge; pairs and charges by attaching |
| Apple Pencil (USB-C) | iPads with a USB-C port | USB-C cable; pairs when plugged in |
| Apple Pencil Pro | iPad Pro M4 and M5, iPad Air M2 and newer, iPad mini (A17 Pro) | Magnetic edge; supports squeeze and haptics |
Please check Apple's compatibility list for your exact model if you are unsure; using the wrong Pencil is a common reason for "not connecting".
Pencil troubleshooting steps
- Check Bluetooth is on and the Pencil is charged. Look at the Pencil battery in the Batteries widget.
- Tighten or replace the tip. A loose or worn tip causes skipping lines and poor pressure response. Replacement tips are inexpensive.
- Unpair and re-pair. In Settings → Apple Pencil (or Bluetooth), forget the Pencil, then reconnect by attaching it magnetically or plugging it in.
- Restart both devices. Restart the iPad, and turn Bluetooth off and on.
- Remove the screen protector. A thick protector reduces Pencil accuracy; a matte "paper-feel" film also wears the tip quickly.
- Test in a different app. If the Pencil works in Notes but not in another app, the app is the problem.
- Try another Pencil or iPad if you can borrow one, to see where the fault lies.
If the Pencil works with another iPad but not yours, the iPad's pairing hardware, display or board may need repair. If it fails on every iPad, replace the Pencil.
Signs that the display needs repair
- Touch problems continue even without a case or screen protector.
- They happen in a particular area of the screen, such as the same strip or corner.
- The iPad has been dropped, bent, wet or squeezed.
- There are coloured lines, shadows or flickering along with the touch fault.
- Ghost touch continues on battery power, without any charger connected.
- Restart, update and reset make no difference.
A display replacement fixes most of these. If the new display does not fix it, the fault is on the board.

How we find the cause of an iPad touch fault
- Touch mapping test across the whole screen to find dead and ghost zones.
- Accessory elimination by testing with and without case, protector and charger.
- Pencil test with a known-good Pencil to compare behaviour.
- Display swap test using a tested display to confirm whether the screen or the board is at fault.
- Repair with genuine parts and a full retest of touch, Pencil, True Tone and brightness.
All repairs carry a 3 to 6 months warranty, depending on the repair. Read more on our iPad repair in Delhi page.

Keep your iPad's touch reliable
- Use a good-quality, thin screen protector and fit it on a clean screen.
- Choose a case that protects the corners and does not press on the edges.
- Charge with a certified adapter in an earthed socket.
- Keep the iPad out of bags where books or laptops press against it.
- Do not sit on, drop or throw the iPad.
- Back up regularly and keep a few GB free.
- Use a replacement Pencil tip when the old one wears out.
If your iPad also will not start, read iPad won't turn on or stuck on Apple logo, and if it charges badly, see iPad not charging.
Is it really a fault? Settings that mimic touch problems
Before assuming the hardware is broken, rule out settings that make the iPad behave as if it has a touch fault. We see these several times a week:
- Multitasking gestures. Swipes from the edges open the app switcher, Control Center or Split View. In Settings → Home Screen & Multitasking you can turn gestures off. If apps seem to close "by themselves", a stray finger on the edge may be the cause.
- Assistive Touch and Switch Control. If these are turned on, you will see a floating button or hear unusual sounds, and taps can trigger different actions.
- Tap to Wake and Touch Accommodations. Hold Duration or Ignore Repeat settings can delay or cancel taps; check Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Touch Accommodations.
- Scribble and handwriting recognition. If you use a Pencil and the iPad types text or switches fields unexpectedly, review Settings → Apple Pencil for Scribble and Only Draw With Apple Pencil.
- Zoom and screen magnification. A zoomed screen makes taps land in the wrong place, which feels like a broken digitizer.
- Dirty edges and thumbs. Palm rejection is good, but a thumb resting on a thin bezel can register as a touch on small iPads.
Run through these first. If everything is set correctly and the fault stays, it is time for a hardware check.
Keyboard cases, docks and "my iPad types by itself"
If random letters, shortcuts or screenshots appear on the iPad, the cause may be a keyboard accessory rather than the screen. A Magic Keyboard or Smart Folio with a stuck or damaged key can send repeated key presses to the iPad, and a wet or dirty keyboard connector can do the same. Disconnect the keyboard and check whether the problem stops. Similarly, a faulty USB-C hub or dock used in an office or classroom can inject noise and ghost inputs. Eliminating accessories one by one is the quickest way to find the real culprit and avoid paying for a repair that is not needed.
What if the problem started after a repair somewhere else?
Touch problems that appear straight after a screen replacement usually point to a low-quality display, a poorly seated cable, dust trapped under the glass or a missing component transfer. Typical signs are touch that fails near the edges, a Pencil that lags, or a Home button that no longer reads fingerprints. The fix is to reopen the iPad, check the cables, and, if the display itself is poor, replace it with a genuine one. We carry out such re-repairs regularly and explain exactly what went wrong before charging anything.

Frequently Asked Questions About iPad Touch and Apple Pencil Problems
Why is my iPad touch screen not responding?
Possible causes include a dirty screen, a thick protector, low storage, a software glitch, moisture, or a damaged display. Clean the screen, remove the case and protector, restart and update. If it persists, the display needs checking.
What is ghost touch on an iPad?
Ghost touch is when the iPad taps, scrolls or types by itself without anyone touching it. It is usually caused by charger noise, moisture, a damaged digitizer or a software bug.
Why does my iPad ghost touch only when charging?
That points to electrical noise from a poor charger or socket without good earthing. Use a certified adapter and cable in an earthed socket and see whether it stops.
Can a screen protector cause touch problems?
Yes. Thick, cheap or badly fitted protectors reduce sensitivity and can cause phantom touches. Remove it to test.
How do I fix part of my iPad screen not responding?
Clean the screen, remove the case and protector, restart and update. If a dead zone remains in the same place, the digitizer or display is damaged and needs repair.
Why is my Apple Pencil not connecting?
Check that the Pencil is compatible with your iPad, charged and that Bluetooth is on. Unpair it in Settings and pair again. A damaged display or charging contacts can also stop pairing.
Why does my Apple Pencil skip or lag?
A worn or loose tip, a thick or textured screen protector, low Pencil battery or a software issue are the main causes. Replace the tip and test without the protector.
Can water damage cause iPad touch problems?
Yes. Moisture creates false touches and can corrode components. Switch the iPad off, do not charge it and bring it in for cleaning and repair.
How much does iPad touch repair cost in Delhi?
It depends on the cause, from free software fixes to ₹7,000–₹32,000 for a full display replacement. Board-level touch controller repairs cost about ₹3,500 to ₹9,000.
Will a new display fix ghost touch?
In most cases yes, if the digitizer was the cause. If the problem continues with a new display, the touch controller on the board is the cause and needs micro-soldering.
Is my data safe during iPad touch repair?
Yes. Display and board repairs do not erase your data. A backup is always a good idea before any repair.
Do you give a warranty on touch screen repairs?
Yes. We use genuine parts and give a 3 to 6 months warranty depending on the repair type.
